Franco Albini (1905- 1977) apprenticed under master architect-designer Gio Ponti, and played a key role in formulating the Rationalist movement in Italy prior to World War II. Throughout the post-war era, Albini continued to create furniture and architecture aimed at purity of expression through modularity and affordable materials. Alphonse Mucha (1860 - 1939) was a Czech painter, illustrator, and graphic artist, living in Paris during the Art Nouveau period, best known for his distinctly stylized and decorative theatrical posters, particularly those of Sarah Bernhardt.
Times of Day (1899) is a four-panel series depicting four different women in fresh yet delicate colors with exuberant floral motifs. Each woman is set within natural surroundings which reflects her mood, enclosed in an elaborate ornamental frame reminiscent of a Gothic window.
This panel is called “Éveil du Matin” or “Morning Awakening” and the first of the series. Followed by “Éclat du Jour (Brightness of Day)”, “Rêverie du Soir (Evening Contemplation)”, and “Repos de la Nuit (Night’s Rest)”
